In 2024, Highland Park Community Association (HPCA) is proudly celebrating its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades of enriching our neighborhood with its vibrant presence. This milestone stands as a testament to the dedication of our hardworking volunteers who have tirelessly contributed to making Highland Park a wonderful place to live, work, learn and play.
At the heart of HPCA are its volunteers, with every initiative, program, and event driven by the commitment of community members. As a completely volunteer-run organization, their efforts have brought forth numerous programs, events and initiatives that have made a lasting impact on our community.
Community Hall Improvements
One shining example of our volunteers' dedication is the extensive renovations undertaken at our community hall. From the installation of solar panels to the creation of a rain garden, community garden boxes and a new playground, these major improvements have created sustainable and inviting spaces for everyone to enjoy. Additionally, initiatives like the Family Skating Rink with it’s beautiful, twinkling overhead lights and fire pit, and the Paint the Pavement Project, with the bright and colourful quilt-like design at the intersection at the corner of the park, not only beautify our surroundings, but also promote safety and connectivity year-round.
Community Events
The commitment to fostering a sense of community extends beyond physical spaces. Year-round events such as community clean-ups, community markets, family skating, monthly seniors’ luncheons, Stampede BBQs, and Music in the Park not only bring our neighbours together, but also strengthen the bonds that define our neighborhood.
Highland Park Preschool
Central to our community is Highland Park Preschool, founded on the vision and initiative of a group of parent volunteers who recognized the need for quality early childhood education in our neighborhood. From humble beginnings with one class in 2016, the preschool has flourished and now serves 70 families with affordable and high-quality education.
These are just a few recent examples! Do you have old pictures of our neighbourhood or events that we can include in a slideshow to share with the community? Contact Anne at volunteer@hpca.ca.
Casino Volunteers & Board Members Needed
None of this would be possible without the continued support of our small but mighty group of volunteers. As we reflect on our achievements over the past 70 years, we acknowledge the pressing need for more hands to ensure the sustainability of our endeavors. Whether it's serving on committees or assisting at events, there are many opportunities for individuals to contribute their time and skills in whatever capacity they can offer.
Two of our more urgent needs are:
Casino Volunteers - July 1 & 2
Casinos can generate over $50,000! Our last Casino raised almost $80,000 for Highland Park. These are important funds for upgrades and improvements that make our community hall and parkspace a welcoming space for community events and programs. You can volunteer for one or both days and pick from one of three daily shifts. Sign up here today.
Board Members
These volunteers provide ongoing support to help lead our community in a fiscally responsible manner. New board members will be elected in June 2024. We are seeking volunteers with skills and experience in accounting, bookkeeping, budgeting, facilities management, marketing and communications, project management and legal.
As we look to the future, we invite members of our community to join us. Volunteering isn't just about giving back; it's about forging connections, gaining new experiences, and making a tangible difference in the lives of those around us. So, if you're passionate about building a stronger, more vibrant community, we urge you to reach out and explore the various volunteer opportunities available at HPCA.
Together, let's continue to nurture the spirit of community that has defined Highland Park for seven decades. Join us, and let's write the next chapter in our community's remarkable journey.
