Deaf and Hear Alberta – Step Ahead

Do you know a deaf or hard-of-hearing senior in your community who might need help using technology to connect with friends, family or services?

Are you looking for volunteer opportunities in your community? Are you comfortable with iPad technology, social media and apps?

Check out the Step Ahead Program!

Deaf and Hear Alberta (DHA) is offering a program called “Step Ahead” and is designed to support seniors who are isolated and lonely through volunteerism.  This program connects isolated deaf and hard-of-hearing seniors together with trained and screened volunteers for friendly conversation and learning opportunities.

This is a free program that they offer designed for Hard of Hearing or Deaf seniors, but they can support all seniors.

DHA has a lending library of technology that seniors can use for short or long term so that they can re-connect with family, friends or their community and even join in church services. With a dedicated volunteer, seniors can learn to navigate how to use an iPad, phone or computer so they can reach out to family for friends through Skype or FaceTime, to learn how to use Apps that can assist with memory or even just to play a game.

Technology isn’t the only piece, volunteers can visit, go for walks or even do a jigsaw puzzle, providing much-needed companionship.
